HEAD GREENKEEPER’S COURSE REPORT

The newly turfed lake surround by 18th green
It’s been a busy few weeks for the greenkeeping team, with the long-awaited rainfall and generally milder weather contributing significantly to our programme of works but also the general appearance and preparation of the course.

Last week saw a fair amount of new grass seed going down, particularly on areas of the course that have seen most traffic during winter as well as the driving range. As mentioned previously, the rainfall helped this activity enormously – and the ‘knitting’ of newly-laid turf around our incredible new water features too.

This week, weather permitting, the greens will be getting their first application of fertiliser for this season. Essentially a spring/summer mix rich in iron, the treatment will help ‘green up’ the putting surfaces and promote growth providing the right weather conditions prevail. We also plan to fertilise the newly-planted trees – again, this will encourage strong and vigorous growth when the temperatures climb further.

In a first here at Leeds Golf Centre, we are soon to embark on ‘divoting’ the fairways – filling holes in common landing areas with a sand/seed mix to improve the appearance and reduce the likelihood of finding that perfect drive with a less-than-perfect lie. Can I please remind all members that replacing divots is essential if we are to maintain excellent fairways throughout the season.

Finally for this edition, you’ll perhaps be interested to learn that we have purchased a new Toro hand mower which will help enormously with the presentation and playability of our greens – especially when summer is in full swing. The height of cut is now set at 6mm but this will be lowered gradually over the coming months – putting practice will have never been so important for you all as the greens get faster and faster this year!

Thanks for reading – look forward to seeing you on the fairways sometime very soon!

PAR-3 CLUB RAISES £250 FOR LOCAL CHARITY
The Par-3 Club held a charity trophy match last week in honour of long-standing member, Mr Dougie Gibson (aged 89 yrs), who has terminal cancer.

Mr Gibson is at present in Wheatfields Hospice, Headingley – indeed, he purchased the trophy himself in order to raise funds for the organisation as a mark of thanks for the quality of care he has received there.

46 members played in the event – the winner being ex-Chairman, Colin Asher, who received his prize and the trophy from Dougie's wife, Marilyn. Second prize went to the current Chairperson, Mrs Shirley Etherington, who in return presented Mrs Gibson with the competition proceeds (which included money raised from a raffle with prizes kindly donated by members).

The trophy match will be held every two years. Additional competitions take place throughout the year on behalf of worthy charities such as St Gemmas Hospice (The Gray Trophy), Leeds General Infirmary’s ‘Take Heart’ appeal and Help for Heroes (both benefitting from The Ticker Trophy).

The continued hard work and support of those Leeds Golf Centre members taking part in such events is sincerely appreciated – thanks very much to all concerned.

LADY CAPTAIN DRIVES IN
Linda Mortimer celebrated the start of her Captain’s year with not one but two ‘drive ins’ at the end of last month – brave by any standards!

Playing a ‘Stableford Waltz’ format – where the number of counting scores is determined by par (ie one score to count on par-5’s, two to count on par-4’s and all three to score on par-3’s) – the Saturday winners were Sheila Rose, Deborah Spry and Jan Ryrie with 77 points (nearest-the-pin was Sheila Rose) and on Tuesday Lynne Handley, Margaret Laeubli and Hilary Temple were victorious with 78 points (Shirley Etherington winning nearest-the-pin).

Linda thoroughly enjoyed both days and has asked for her thanks to be sent to the many lady members that took part.

NEW SOCIETIES PACKAGES NOW ON OFFER
Leeds Golf Centre is an excellent venue for society golf, especially now that the stunning Nineteen Bar & Grill is up and running. Of course, once the primary course construction works are completed in a few weeks’ time, the Wike Ridge championship course will be similarly impressive.

This year’s society rates are now in effect and we would welcome support from all members in distributing this information to family, friends and colleagues – especially where golf societies are a regular fixture.

Please visit the website at www.leedsgolfcentre.com/visitors/society-golf for package details and pricing – alternatively, contact the Pro Shop on 0113 288 6000 to enquire about bespoke arrangements or email groupgolf@leedsgolfcentre.com for information.

SPECIAL ‘OLYMPIC’ COMPETITION ANNOUNCED

Richard Allen and Linda Mortimer, your new 2012/13 captains, have announced details of a special one-off competition in celebration of the forthcoming Olympic Games.

Taking place on Sunday 5 August, this handicap non-qualifier will be played over 18 holes using the standard Stableford scoring format but promises to be great fun. The competition will be played in teams – each team representing a country.

During the round, there will be five ‘activities’ to represent the five Olympic rings – but beware, they’ll either help or hinder scoring ability! Each player’s score will then count towards the overall ‘national’ score and the country accumulating most Stableford points will be declared the gold medal-winner! Prizes will also be on offer for bronze and silver-winning teams with the presentation ceremony taking place immediately after the conclusion of play.

Watch out for more details in the coming weeks or speak to Richard/Linda at your convenience.

PRESS RELEASE: LEEDS CORPORATE GOLF LEAGUE REVEALED AT ‘THE HOME OF MODERN GOLF’

A brand-new competitive golf tournament for Leeds’ business community has today been unveiled by Leeds Golf Centre.

The inaugural Leeds Corporate Golf League – a unique competition that will see 16 teams competing predominantly from the professional services and property sectors – has been designed to offer an alternative to standard corporate golf days.

Played fortnightly on Wednesday evenings from May this year, the exciting initiative utilises the highly acclaimed ‘PowerPlay Golf’ format where not one but two flags are sited on each green (one ‘easy’ and one ‘hard’). Played over The Oaks par-3 course, participants are tasked with a risk/reward decision on each of the 12 holes in order to avenge or simply outsmart their opponents – the resulting contests often being more entertaining and dramatic than a typical 18-hole competition.

Costing just £600 plus VAT for the season, teams will be competing for a prize fund exceeding £2000 with golf equipment, PGA professional coaching at Leeds Golf Centre’s renowned Academy and vouchers for Nineteen Bar & Grill all on offer.

Leigh Tasker, Business Development Manager at Leeds Golf Centre and tournament organiser, commented: “The beauty of this concept is that it’s more flexible and far less costly than a typical corporate golf day. Players will complete their rounds in about two hours and teams can consist of four different players at each of the six league matchdays – the point here being that companies can engage better on a one-to-one basis with their guests whilst obviously enjoying some post-match networking with other teams too.”

“In many respects, PowerPlay is similar to five-a-side football or Twenty20 cricket and we’re delighted to have the chance to share it with Leeds’ golf-mad business community,” he added.

In just 12 months, Parklane Properties has totally transformed Leeds Golf Centre thanks to an unprecedented multi-million pound investment programme. Rescuing the business from administration in February 2011, the company – better known for its estate agency, student lettings and property development businesses – has upgraded the facility’s golf courses, car park, Pro Shop, changing rooms and shower/WC facilities as well as adding two superb high-tech swing studios and more recently, the brand-new Nineteen Bar & Grill.

Leeds Corporate Golf League matches will be held fortnightly on Wednesday evenings from May to August, with matchday tee times from 4pm. For further information or to enquire about entering a team, please contact Leigh Tasker on 07590 950217 or by email leigh@parklaneproperties.com or download the brochure by clicking here.

TAYLORMADE DEMO DAY FRIDAY 13 APRIL 2012

Photo from TaylorMade Tour Truck Demo Day 2011

Choosing the right golf equipment can be a difficult task – the range of manufacturers, infinite arrangement of grip, shaft and clubhead combinations not to mention welcome and unwelcome advice from peers can frequently result in fundamentally bad decisions.

At Leeds Golf Centre however, customers have the reassurance and backing of scientifically-proven technology and expertise at their disposal. Custom-fitting has become the standard practice of golf stores across the country, yet we’ve taken the concept a step further by engaging some of the best manufacturers in the business in a programme of demo days this Spring.

Offering half-hour sessions to those who are keen to purchase new equipment at the start of this season, Leeds Golf Centre can offer appointments with TaylorMade's custom-fitters and a FULL range of 2012 equipment as follows:
  • TaylorMade Demo Day Friday 13th April 4pm – 8pm
Appointments are available at a cost of £20 – in the event that a customer purchases new clubs from Leeds Golf Centre within a fortnight of their session, this sum will be refunded against the order (please note, the £20 credit will be available against any new set of clubs regardless of manufacturer). A selection of items will also be available to those wishing to try out the latest equipment without the custom-fit service – in this instance, no appointment is necessary.

To book your 30-minute slot, please visit us or contact the Pro Shop on 0113 2886000 – please note, the £20 payment is to be made at the time of booking.

HEAD GREENKEEPER’S COURSE REPORT

It’s fantastic to welcome the clocks going forwards with some great weather – not only because it’s just nice to see more people on the golf course but also because it’s important to get some early growth in the grass too. Long may it continue!

We spent much of last week top-dressing and spraying the greens with fungicide to protect against Fusarium, all of which is important work in preparing the putting surfaces for the onset of summer and the increasing traffic on our golf courses. Once the irrigation is turned back on – or if we receive some natural rainfall – we can soon commence the final stages of our greens maintenance programme by applying fertiliser to promote growth and a healthy sward.

As we progress through the remainder of this week, we remain focussed on two key areas – completing the aeration work by vertidraining the fairways and ‘reinstating’ the course in light of the significant changes and redevelopment work we’ve witnessed over winter. Members and visitors have been extremely patient with us throughout the construction project and we remain committed to delivering the best possible Wike Ridge course for the start of the competitive season in just over a week’s time.

In terms of the course development work, we are now entering the final stages – the new bunkering is coming on at a tremendous pace, as is the finishing of our incredible new water features. Everyone is reminded that these areas are GUR at this time and this is something we wish to see observed at all times. Notwithstanding this point, anyone having played in the last month will no doubt be astounded at the scale and quality of the changes – it really is a turning point in the club’s future and one we are all very proud of.

Can I just remind all players that the work of our greenkeepers is potentially hazardous – if there’s work taking place on a particular hole, we’d welcome your utmost care and attention in ensuring that the team stay safe! Once again, thank you – I look forward to seeing more of you on the course as the good weather (hopefully) continues!

HEAD GREENKEEPER'S COURSE REPORT

Greens staff at Leeds Golf Centre hollow tyning.
It’s been a very busy two weeks at Leeds Golf Centre. As a result of relatively dry weather this past fortnight, we have been able to complete much of the planned mowing – it won’t be too long before the new season is upon us and the soil temperature starts to rise so it’s essential we keep on top of this. At the same time, we have to acknowledge that wet weather governs this activity so it’s a difficult balance to strike.

Meantime, the course developments are coming along in leaps and bounds and are on schedule – let’s hope that the weather will be kind for the next few months to ensure everything stays at a good pace. The new ponds and lakes are all but completed, the new tees are looking fantastic, the new fourth green is having drainage installed and irrigation is being routed to all the newly laid surfaces. It’s incredible to see what’s happening out there.

A planned programme of vertidraining and slit tining is still very much ongoing – fairways and walk-off areas have already been done to help alleviate compaction and waterlogging – and the putting green has also been drained to prevent waterlogging in wet conditions. Connected to this, we are also glad to say the big fairway roller has been out to consolidate the uneven ground and rutting around the course.

As it happens, with today’s excellent weather, we’ve actually brought forward our plans to hollow tine the greens before adding fertiliser etc – please bear with us whilst we complete this essential maintenance so that we can focus on delivering some excellent greens come the start of the season in a little over a month’s time!

NEWS IN BRIEF

SOFT SPIKES NOW IN FORCE
In a new initiative to protect our fabulous facilities from heavy foot-flow, we are now operating a new ‘soft spikes only’ policy for golf shoes. Indoors and out, steel spikes can easily ‘scar’ greens or damage flooring – the decision to ban them has already been taken by thousands of golf clubs around the world and is commonplace at courses across the Yorkshire region.

Anyone reading this who would like to acquire new footwear for the forthcoming golf season should contact the Pro Shop on 0113 288 6000 – some great deals available while stocks last!

JOE FEATHER GOLF DAY – ENTRIES INVITED!
We are delighted to announce that Leeds Golf Centre is once again supporting the interests of Joe Feather, our greatest hope for stardom on the European Tour. The unique event, designed to raise money for Joe’s sponsorship as well as the captains’ charities, will take place on Sunday 20th May – tee times are available between 11am and 2pm with entries costing £80 per pair.

The day will start with breakfast served in Nineteen Bar & Grill before the competition gets underway with an 18-hole betterball Stableford event. Prizes supplied by Srixon will be on offer for first to fifth places, as well as for longest drive and nearest-the-pin – furthermore, a special competition will be hosted in the TruSim simulator as players arrive off the course.

Following completion of the round, players and guests will enjoy dinner in Nineteen Bar & Grill along with the added interest of a charity auction – hopefully hosted by a celebrity sportsperson or two!

For further information, please see www.joefeathergolf.com or call the Pro Shop on 0113 288 6000.

MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES
Please accept our apologies – some of you may have received an email newsletter at the end of last week with details of membership category prices – this correspondence was not intended for members, the pricing of Full and 5-Day membership options were ‘public’ rates. We will be writing to you this week with details of renewals etc – please be assured that the information in the letter will set our clearly what your options are in terms of the forthcoming membership season. Apologies once again for any inconvenience.

WINTER WHEELS
The winter wheel rule for trolleys will remain in place until the end of March weather permitting. Having such a mild/dry winter has undoubtedly assisted Brian Carr and his greenkeeping team in preparing the course for the start of the new season, yet there appears to be unilateral agreement that the ‘hedgehog’ wheels have made a real contribution this year. We would like to thank members and guests sincerely for their cooperation in this valuable initiative.

WIKE RIDGE COURSE UPDATE

Progress on the 13th green.
Our appointed construction team from White Horse (Northern) Contractors Ltd started work on 30 January and have unquestionably made tremendous progress, no doubt aided by the relatively mild and dry winter. Despite snowfall in early February, the pace of change is simply phenomenal – we are working towards a completion date in just a few weeks’ time with the intention that our magnificent new layout will be in play later this year.

A number of key changes to the design have been made since we first announced plans in November – these can be summarised as follows:

The tee for our new fourth hole – replacing our current fifth hole – will now be located on the mound of waste ground adjacent to the existing fifth tee. This will provide players with a tremendous view up the fairway towards our new three-tier green.

A new championship tee for our sixth hole will be constructed at the rear of the current fifth green – this will largely be used for major competitions and scratch team matches but will see players teeing off over the bridleway down into the valley towards the beautiful new cascading water features which have superseded our plans to create one large lake. Furthermore, the introduction of an authentic ‘Scottish burn’ will provide yet further challenges on this heavily revised hole.

Given that our current eighth green performs extremely well, we have improved our plans and elected to retain the existing green. This has obviously accelerated the construction project somewhat and will ultimately result in play on the new course earlier than was originally anticipated. To ensure that the eighth hole still feels ‘new’, we are introducing natural featuring between the first landing area and the green, especially down the left-side of the fairway – this effectively making the hole a tricky three-shotter for many golfers.

The formerly-proposed lake in front of the ninth tee has been replaced by the new Scottish burn which actually links much of the ribbon of water originating from the cascading ponds in front of the sixth green. Players will need to take note of this as the burn may not be totally visible from the tee – beware of mishit shots here!

Our tenth hole – despite being free of significant changes in the original proposals – now has water in play as a result of the Scottish burn once again crossing the fairway but also as a result of a large lake extending closer to the fairway from the back of the current thirteenth green. What was once a fairly straightforward hole is now a real test of nerve and accuracy – regular players will of course note that the tenth green is already a stiff two-putt!

In addition to the principal design changes above, the bunkering has been further revised to give a total of 43 new hazards – indeed, each hole on the course will see new ones being added or existing ones remodelled. Furthermore, we are creating a new buggy path/walkway from the sixth green to the seventh tee – known as ‘the woodland walk’ and yet further tree transplanting is due to take place very shortly to provide greater definition on the seventh, eighth, ninth, eleventh and twelfth holes.

NB We wish to stress that members will be able to enjoy a full 18-hole handicap qualifying Wike Ridge layout in time for the start of the competitive season on 7th April. Whilst there will be GUR locations across the course (notably part of the thirteenth fairway) and occasional temporary teeing areas, our expectation is that all 18 main greens will be in play and that the course length will be consistent with the current measurements. Standard scratch scores will not be affected.

In conclusion, we are delighted that the course redevelopment work is being met with significant and hugely encouraging support from our members and other customers – if you haven’t witnessed it yourself, we’d urge you to get out there soon and share the excitement!

DEMO DAYS AT LEEDS GOLF CENTRE

Choosing the right golf equipment can be a difficult task – the range of manufacturers, infinite arrangement of grip, shaft and clubhead combinations not to mention welcome and unwelcome advice from peers can frequently result in fundamentally bad decisions.

At Leeds Golf Centre however, customers have the reassurance and backing of scientifically-proven technology and expertise at their disposal. Custom-fitting has become the standard practice of golf stores across the country, yet we’ve taken the concept a step further by engaging some of the best manufacturers in the business in a programme of demo days this Spring.

Offering half-hour sessions to those who are keen to purchase new equipment at the start of this season, Leeds Golf Centre can offer appointments with manufacturer-approved custom-fitters and a FULL range of 2012 equipment as follows:
  • Mizuno Wednesday 14th March 3pm – 7pm
  • Ping Tuesday 3rd April 3pm – 7pm
  • Callaway Wednesday 4th April 4pm – 8pm
  • TaylorMade Friday 13th April 4pm – 8pm
Appointments are available at a cost of £20 – in the event that a customer purchases new clubs from Leeds Golf Centre within a fortnight of their session, this sum will be refunded against the order (please note, the £20 credit will be available against any new set of clubs regardless of manufacturer). A selection of items will also be available to those wishing to try out the latest equipment without the custom-fit service – in this instance, no appointment is necessary.

To book your 30-minute slot, please visit us or contact the Pro Shop on 0113 2886000 – please note, the £20 payment is to be made at the time of booking.
